Petition the US Surgeon General
Harmful hormonal and surgical interventions are performed on gender-nonconforming young people without a single long-term study to support their use. Yet these life-altering treatments are routinely offered to children on the basis of feelings and identities likely to change with maturity. Young adults are now beginning speaking publicly and remorsefully about the irreversible impact these treatments have had on their health, fertility, and sexual function.
The Kelsey Coalition wrote to the US Surgeon General on June 19, 2019 to alert him to our concerns and urged him to issue a Call to Action to increase public awareness and inform healthcare professionals about this urgent matter. As the Nation’s Doctor who has pledged to lead with science, a Call to Action will encourage an evidence-based treatment approach to the exponentially growing number of gender-questioning youth who are currently subjected to serious medical harms and irreversible fertility risks.
Young people should not be offered life-altering hormonal and surgical interventions that are not supported by rigorous studies establishing long-term efficacy and safety. The risks of irreparable harm and regret are too great.
As a follow-up to our June 19, 2019 letter requesting a Call to Action, we also submitted our online petition, "Urgent Request to the US Surgeon General: Protect Young People from Irreversible Medical Harm," in July. The petition and comments may be viewed here:
